BOONE, N.C. - After setting the community service hours record for a second straight year, App State Athletics finished second overall in the NCAA Division I Team Works Community Service competition, highlighted by eight sports finishing in the top 10.
App State athletics shattered the community service hours record with 14,460 hours completed, surpassing the 2018-19 mark of 10,500 hours.
The Mountaineers led the Sun Belt for the second year in a row with women's basketball holding the top spot among all women's Division I sports. Football ranked No. 1 nationally among all Division I football programs and second among all men's sports.
"I am extremely proud of our student-athletes," director of student-athlete development Pierre Banks said. "Their commitment to the High Country and their respective communities shows that they have the heart of a champion in and out of uniform."
Five men's sports placed in the top 10 with four in the top five. Men's basketball was second in their sport while wrestling (No. 4), men's tennis (No. 5) and men's track and field finished eighth.
For the women, field hockey and women's tennis joined women's basketball as all three programs were in the top 10 in their sport. Field hockey earned a third-place ranking and women's tennis placed 10th.
Student-athletes volunteered at the Hardin Park School in Boone, assisted in building homes for Habitat for Humanity, participated in canned food drives, packed shoeboxes for Samaritan's Purse and visited seniors in assisted living facilities.
