Ninth-Inning Walks Doom App State vs. Troy

TROY, Al. — Three Appalachian State University baseball pitchers threw a combined four walks and hit one batter in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Troy to tie the game and send it into extra innings. The Mountaineers (8-24, 3-12 Sun Belt) would fall, 3-2, in the 12th inning on a wild pitch.

Colin Schmid pitched the best game of his young career on Sunday. Schmid threw 6.2 scoreless innings and retired 13-straight batters starting with the third out in the second inning through the third out in the sixth. 

While Schmid and the other App State pitchers only struck out three Trojan (20-13, 6-6 Sun belt) batter, the Mountaineer defense played excellent. They committed no errors, and Tyler Stroup and Tanner Mann-Fix made two spectacular grabs in the outfield to keep hits off the board.

App State put the game's first run on the board when Chandler Seagle singled to center field and was driven in two batters later by Matt VernonAppalachian added another when Beau Myers scored from third after being hit by a pitch, stealing second, and advancing on a ground out.

Stephen Schoch replaced Schmid in the seventh inning and got the Apps out a jam by forcing a ground out with the bases loaded.

Schoch walked two of the first three batters he faced in the ninth and was replaced by Dallas DeVrieze. DeVrieze then issued a walk to only batter he faced and was replaced by Matt Schaeffer. Schaeffer walked one run in and then hit the next batter to tie the game. 

In the bottom of the 12th inning, Troy hit a lead-off double and then advanced the runner on a sacrifice fly. Luke Watts came in to pitch and threw a wild pitch over Zach Hummel's head allowing the winning run across the plate. 

The Mountaineers will be back on the road on Tuesday when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for a midweek game against Tennessee. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
