Boruff Breaks Own School Record, Men's Track and Field Fairs Well at UNC Classic and Liberty Open

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's track and field had another solid showing over the weekend as the squad competed at both the North Carolina Classic and the Liberty Open.

At the UNC Classic, freshman DeSean Pearce placed 13th overall in the 60m dash with a time of 7.11. I

In the 200m and 400m runs, John Svoboda had the top spots for the Black and Gold, finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Dennis Moore also was strong in the 200m, taking home 10th with a time of 22.93.

Nick O'Keefe led ASU in the 800m and mile runs, placing 15th and 10th the events.

Appalachian continued with its dominance in the distance events as Josh Houser, Phil Mitchell and Bud Galloway notched the fifth througth seventh place spots in the 3000m run and Asmeron Desta finished first in the 5000m run, with Mike Walker and Alec Meyer placing fourth and seventh.

Daniel Neal took home seventh in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.26, while Phillip Bush was 11th, finishing the race in 8.51.

Darius Purcell finished fifth in the high jump on the afternoon, jumping 6-8, while Ryan Twiford and Mike Wilson grabbed the second and fifth place spots in the pole vault.

In the long jump, Ricky Harris earned the runner-up spot, leaping 23-00.00, and in the throwing events, Malcolm Styers paced Appalachian, finishing third in the shot put and second in the weight throw, with Tim Daly placing ninth in the weight throw.

Heptathletes Matt Boruff, Jake Goodchild and Matt Pfingst all competed at the Liberty Open on Saturday and were quite impressive.

Boruff finished second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.66, and captured first in the pole vault, vaulting 14-7.25, recording a new personal record and keeping him at third on ASU's all-time list in the event. Goodchild finished third in the pole vault and Pfingst sixth, both also recording new pr's and etching their name in the record books. Goodchild's vault moved him into fourth on ASU's all-time list in the heptathlon pole vault and Pfingst's performance placed him at sixth on the all-time list.

In the final heptathlon standings, Boruff won the runner-up spot, recording 4840, setting a new Appalachian school record and shattering the previous school record he held which was 4720 points. Goodchild's and Pfingst's outings were good enough to place them at fifth and sixth all-time in the heptathlon for ASU.

The Apps return to action Friday January 30, as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete at the East Tennessee Niswonger Invitational.
