MONTGOMERY, Ala. – With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning,
Ethan Puig delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit to just one run, but a groundout followed and App State stranded the tying run in scoring position in a 6-5 loss to sixth-seeded Texas State on Wednesday at DABOS Park.
The third-seeded Mountaineers (30-23) will play again on Thursday in an elimination game against the loser of Louisiana and No. 24 Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m. ET.
The Bobcats (35-22) took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from Blake Beheler, breaking a 2-2 tie.
The Mountaineers struck first in the ballgame.
Kameron Miller walked to lead off the second inning and after App State loaded the bases, Miller came across to score on an RBI groundout. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were forced to settle for just one run in the inning.
After Texas State jumped in front with two runs in the top of the third, Miller was there for the answer again in the bottom half of the inning.
Riley Luft reached on a hit by pitch to begin the inning and two batters later Miller launched an RBI double to dead center field to knot the score at 2-2.
Jalen Seward belted a 413-foot solo home run in the sixth inning, his fifth of the season, and
Nico Soul came through with an RBI double in the eighth to keep the Mountaineers within striking distance.
Gage Peterson suffered just his first loss of the season, despite giving the Mountaineers seven innings in the start. The right-hander struck out six but allowed five runs (four earned).
Max Tramontana and
Ethan Wilson combined to record the final six outs on the mound.
Seward finished the game with two hits and
Joseph Zamora reached base three times in the ballgame, but the Mountaineers went just 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
