MONTGOMERY, Ala. – App State Baseball set a program-record with 17 Sun Belt wins and finished third in the standings for its best mark in any league since 2012, but saw its season come to a close on Thursday, falling to No. 24 Coastal Carolina in an elimination game at the conference tournament.
Despite being picked to finish 10th in the preseason, App State (30-24, 17-13) led the league in batting, improved dramatically on the mound and saw four players earn All-Sun Belt honors.
App State rallied from a 3-0 deficit to make it a 3-2 ballgame in the sixth inning, but the second-seeded Chanticleers (37-20, 21-9) scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull away and win.
Fifth-year Mountaineer
Jordan Fisher capped his career with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning, while senior
Everett Harris also collected a pair of strikeouts in relief.
Senior catcher
Tommy Walker threw out three baserunners in the ballgame and notched a single in his final game as a Mountaineer.
Coastal Carolina broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-run third inning and never trailed in the contest.
App State scored a run in the fifth on an RBI groundout from
Steven Smith, plating
Nico Soul who led off the inning with a single. Soul reached base three times in the ballgame and threw out a runner at the plate from left field.
Ethan Puig led off the sixth inning with a triple and scored later on
Kameron Miller's RBI groundout.
Chanticleers' right-hander Cameron Fluky, ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the nation by MLB Pipeline, struck out six batters while giving up just a run in the start. All-conference reliever Darin Horn finished the game with five innings of one-run ball, striking out eight to earn the win.
