BOONE, N.C. – Four App State relief pitchers combined to fire seven scoreless innings to lead the Mountaineers to a 3-1 victory over ETSU on Tuesday at Smith Stadium.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, App State (23-16, 10-8) responded with two runs in the home half of the frame, which proved to be enough offense for the game. With one out,
Riley Luft and
Ethan Puig hit back-to-back singles and
Kameron Miller followed with an RBI groundout to tie the score. With two outs in the inning,
Jake Mummau ripped an RBI double to right-center field to push App State in front 2-1.
Miller added on the only offense thereafter with a 438-foot home run to left field in the sixth inning, his third consecutive game with a home run, to push the lead to 3-1.
With the tying run at the plate in the ninth,
Jake Beaty induced a game-ending ground ball to shortstop to polish off his first career save. Beaty tossed the final 1.1 innings and picked up a strikeout.
Max Tramontana earned his second win of the season with two scoreless innings, covering the third and fourth. He recorded a pair of strikeouts and allowed just a single.
Everette Harris also worked a pair of scoreless innings, rolling a double play ball to erase a leadoff single in the fifth.
Logan Tibbett added a strikeout in 1.2 scoreless innings.
Conner Barozzino worked his longest outing of the season, going two innings and recording a strikeout in the start for App State. After giving up a double and a walk to begin the ballgame he bucked down to allow just one run, retiring six of the final seven ETSU batters he faced.
The Buccaneers (25-13, 8-4) went 0-for-10 with runners on base in the ballgame.
The Mountaineers have now won nine of their last 11 games and will continue their homestand this weekend when they welcome Georgia Southern to Smith Stadium for a three-game set.
