MORGANTON, N.C. — Fighting for a team title in a back-and-forth final round Tuesday, App State Women's Golf finished as the Mimosa Hills Invitational runner-up, placing second in a 12-team field as Charlotte used late heroics to edge the Mountaineers by a single stroke.
Charlotte, the highest-ranked team in the field, posted a 42-over total (298-303-305—906) at Mimosa Hills Golf Club. Tournament host App State (43 over at 301-305-301—907) finished one shot ahead of third-place Longwood (44 over at 302-302-304—908 with only four available players), and UNCG was fourth at 49 over.
App State started the last nine holes of the 54-hole event with a one-shot lead over both the 49ers and Lancers, lost its small lead, then moved back in front with late help from a last-hole birdie by
Ona Lukes. Charlotte's last two golfers finished in style at the 18th hole, as Emma Heyman chipped in from in front of the green for a birdie before medalist Pinky Chaisilprungruang holed a 21-foot birdie putt to prevent the Mountaineers and 49ers from tying for first in the team race.
Attempting to win its first team tournament title since 2019, an on-the-rise App State team posted its third runner-up finish in five spring events leading up to next week's Ironwood Invitational in Greenville and the April 20 start of the Sun Belt Championship tournament.
The 59th-ranked Chaisilprungruang finished at 2 under to win the individual title by eight strokes. A pair of freshmen led the way for App State, as
Zoe Duval tied for fifth place at 9 over (76-75-74—225) and
Alisa Pressley tied for 12th at 12 over (75-77-76—228). Lukes (75-78-76—229) and
Salem Lee (79-75-75—229) tied for 14th with 13-over totals.
Maria Pinedo contributed to the team's first-round total thanks to an opening 75 before finishing at 24 over. Competing as individuals,
Addi Ritter closed with a 1-over 73 en route to a 20-over finish and
Kendal Graham had a second-round 79.
