CHAPEL HILL — Zoe Duval capped a record-setting freshman season with a top-25 regional finish in the first NCAA postseason appearance by an App State women's golfer.
Duval tied for 25th place with a 7-over total of 73-67-77—217 at the UNC Finley Golf Club, highlighted by seven birdies in a 3-under second round that matched the best 18-hole score in program history. She finished the event with 12 birdies, including one on a long putt from the fringe at the 10th hole midway through Wednesday's final round, which yielded only eight under-par scores among the 66 competitors.
Duval entered the final round at even par through 36 holes and in a tie for 12th place thanks to just the third 67 in program history. The only other 67s both occurred earlier this season — 4-under rounds on par-71 layouts from
Ona Lukes and
Alisa Pressley.
Starting the second round on hole No. 10, Duval had four birdies over her first five holes and then three more in a late four-hole stretch. She had eight tap-in pars after making repeated runs at additional birdies and tied for the third-best round of the day while hitting 15 of 18 greens.
From each regional site, the top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing top-five team advanced to compete in the NCAA Championships to be played May 22-27 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Virginia qualified as teams, with NC State falling short in a three-team playoff for the final two spots. Princeton's Thanana Kotchasanmanee, who played alongside Duval on Wednesday, secured the individual berth as a regional co-medalist with a 6-under total of 66-72-66—204. Oklahoma State's Marta Silchenko also finished at 6 under.
