CHAPEL HILL — App State Women's Golf freshman
Zoe Duval made more history Tuesday, matching the record for the lowest 18-hole score in program history while climbing into a tie for 12th place at the Chapel Hill Regional thanks to a 3-under 67 at the UNC Finley Golf Club.
With a 36-hole score of even par (73-67—140) in the first NCAA appearance by an App State women's golfer, Duval enters the final round just two shots behind the leader for the one individual berth available to the NCAA Championships in California later this month.
Starting the second round on hole No. 10, Duval totaled seven birdies, including four on her first five holes and then three more in a late four-hole stretch. She had eight tap-in pars after making repeated runs at additional birdies and tied for the third-best round of the day in Chapel Hill.
Duval is tied for the tournament lead with 11 birdies through two rounds. The only other 67s in program history both occurred earlier this season — 4-under rounds on par-71 layouts from
Ona Lukes and
Alisa Pressley.
From each regional site, the top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing top-five team will advance to compete in the NCAA Championships to be played May 22-27 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, NC State and Mississippi State hold down the top five team spots after 36 of 54 holes, with Virginia in sixth. Among golfers not representing the top-five schools, Princeton's Thanana Kotchasanmanee leads the way at 2 under (66-72—138), followed by Virginia's Jaclyn LaHa (1 under) and Kent State's Veronika Kedronova (1 under). Duval is currently part of a four-way tie for fourth in the race for an individual championships berth.
