CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — App State Wrestling will enter next weekend's regular season finale with a chance to earn at least a share of another SoCon title.
The Mountaineers suffered their first league loss Sunday, falling 20-13 at preseason favorite Chattanooga in Maclellan Gym.
The league standings are crowded at the top with three one-loss teams, as Chattanooga lost on Jan. 31 against The Citadel, before the Bulldogs lost at App State on Feb. 8. Those three teams are all 1-1 in that head-to-head grouping and 6-1 in the league going into the final week.
The Mountaineers (9-6, 6-1) wrap up the regular season next Sunday with a home dual against Gardner-Webb (7-11, 4-3) at 2 p.m. in Varsity Gym, while Chattanooga (9-5, 6-1) could face a tough test at Bellarmine and The Citadel (10-7, 6-1) takes on VMI.
With wrestling starting Sunday at 184 pounds, App State posted victories via Tomas Brooker (2-0 decision at 184), Stephan Monchery (14-4 major decision at heavyweight), Kaden Keiser (7-3 decision at 149) and Anthony Conetta (3-1 decision at 165).
A controversial overturn of an App State takedown in overtime of the fifth match, a loss at 133 pounds, and a go-ahead takedown for Chattanooga in the final 30 seconds of the next match at 141 pounds put the Mocs in the driver's seat. The result at 133 created a six-point swing in a dual decided by seven points, as App State trailed 15-13 entering the final match at 174 pounds before one of Chattanooga's top wrestlers, Kamdyn Munro, capped the event with a 20-3 tech fall against App State backup Joe Zovistoski, a redshirt senior making just the fourth dual start of his career.
App State held a 7-6 lead when Jarvis Little moved into position for a takedown with 42 seconds left in the Sudden Victory overtime period against UTC's Ethan Uhorchuk at 133. One official credited Little with a match-ending takedown, then the officials agreed after their own meeting to review the call, without a Chattanooga challenge.
The officials overturned the call of a takedown, deciding one prematurely signaled for three points based on their review, but Little was in position to erase any uncertainty if the sequence had continued. Instead, because the call of a takedown stopped the match, Little and Uhorchuk returned to action at neutral with both wrestlers on their feet.
When action resumed, Uhorchuk quickly got in on a shot and put Little in a defensive position. That sequence wasn't ruled a takedown in real time, but Chattanooga threw its challenge brick, and a review led officials to give Uhorchuk a takedown that ended the match.
Instead of leading 10-6, App State trailed 9-7 going into the showdown at 141, and Chattanooga's Hunter Mason erased a 4-3 deficit on a takedown with 23 seconds left in his 6-4 win. Aldo Hernandez trailed 3-1 after one period but rode out the second period and earned two back points in the final two seconds of the period - officials reviewed the sequence to determine if Hernandez got to a three count before the buzzer but upheld the call of two.
App State trailed 12-7 before Keiser won a decision at 149, and a first-period takedown was the difference in Cavarius Liddie's 4-2 decision against Jeremiah Price at 157. Conetta kept the Mountaineers mathematically alive with his victory, which included an escape and two points for stalling as he finished off a takedown just after the buzzer in his 3-1 decision.
Brooker had no takedowns in a ranked matchup with Landon Jones, prevailing 2-0 on a second-period escape and third-period rideout. After Chattanooga's Kade Rule won 8-3 against Logan Eller in a 197 matchup of wrestlers with unbeaten SoCon records, Monchery recorded four takedowns in his major decision.
The Mocs won the next three matches at the 125, 133 and 141 divisions, starting the run with a 6-1 decision from Minnesota transfer and two-time NCAA qualifier Cooper Flynn, a senior who led 1-0 entering the third period against true freshman Cooper Foster.
Chattanooga ended a 10-match losing streak to App State, and Sunday was the eighth time in the last 11 meetings that their dual was decided by seven team points or less.
App State's 2025-26 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station.
