BOONE, N.C. - The App State volleyball team (7-2) is set to host Duke (3-6) and Davidson (4-4) in the Holmes Convocation Center for the Mountaineer Classic this weekend. The Mountaineers will play Duke at 6 p.m. on Friday, Duke and Davidson will clash at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and App State will take on Davidson at 2 p.m. on Sunday. All three matches will be available to stream on ESPN+.
The Mountaineers will honor their alumni during Friday's match against Duke.

App State fell short to No. 25 UNC in four sets on Tuesday. The Mountaineers out-served the Tar Heels, seven aces to two and held UNC to a hitting percentage of .065 in the second set. Senior

Mountaineer Leaders
Winterhoff stands ninth in the nation and remains the Sun Belt's lead in hitting percentage (0.465). Additionally, she ranks 11th nationally and second in the SBC in total blocks with 50 (nine solo, 41 assists). Winterhoff continues to lead the Mountaineers in aces (13) and kills with 109 (2.73 k/s). Morris follows close behind in the kills category with 103 kills (2.58 k/s) through nine matches. With 144 digs (3.6 d/s), Davis leads the Mountaineers and stands third in the SBC in the digs category, while Heidemann leads the team and ranks third in the SBC in assists with 267 (6.68 a/s). App State ranks 25th nationally and stands second in the SBC in blocks (91). The Mountaineers also stand second in the league in aces (65). Additionally, App State is third in the league and among the NCAA's top 45 in assists (441) and kills (477).
Scouting the Tournament Field

The Mountaineers are 1-1 against ACC teams this fall as they set their sights on Duke. App State and Duke have met on 29 occasions dating back to 1972. The Mountaineers last met the Blue Devils on Feb. 17, 2021, falling short to Duke in three sets. App State out-served Duke, six aces to two, and matched the Blue Devils with 45 digs. McCall Denny led the team with 11 kills, while Sam Bickley made a team high 23 assists. Emma Reilly led the Mountaineers with 14 digs, and Morgan Flores served up four of App State's six aces.
Duke (3-6) enters the tournament after a four-set loss against Cleveland State. The Blue Devils opened the 2025 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Bryant before dropping contests to Houston, FIU, and Texas Tech. The Blue Devils have also recorded 3-1 wins over Alabama State and Utah Valley. In the ACC rankings, Duke stands second in digs (538) and fourth in kills (446). The Blue Devils also round out the league's top five in assists (411) and aces (56).
Sophomore Taylor Williams leads the Blue Devils with 112 kills, averaging 3.39 kills per set. With 199 assists (7.37 a/s), freshman Charlotte Glass leads the team in the assists category. Sophomore Mailinah Godchall leads Duke and the ACC in digs (162) and digs per set (4.63) in addition to rounding out the NCAA's top 30 in both categories. Freshman Ashby Zubchevich is the Blue Devils' top server (14 aces) and fellow freshman Zoë Gillen-Malveaux is Duke's top blocker (37 blocks, six solo, 31 assists).

App State leads the series against Davidson, 31-19, and defeated the Wildcats in four sets at the Wake Forest Invitational last fall.
Lulu Ambrose led the Mountaineers with 14 kills, followed by Winterhoff, who made 12 kills on a .688 clip. Heidemann dished out 49 of App State's 53 assists and made seven digs.
Caroline Farthing,
Kenady Roper, and Winterhoff, and combined for six of App State's seven aces, each contributing two. App State made 14 blocks to Davidson's six, and held the Wildcats to a hitting percentage of .029 in the fourth set.
Davidson is 4-4 on the season and looks to snap a three-match losing streak after dropping contests to Coastal Carolina, Wake Forest, and Maryland. The Wildcats dropped their season opener to Winthrop before going on a four-match win-streak from Aug. 30 - Sept. 6, picking up wins over William & Mary, Charlotte, Elon, and Delaware State.
Junior Elena Garcia-Guerrios leads the Wildcats in kills (101, 3.61 k/s) and aces (10). She ranks second in the A10 in kills per set and points per set (4.18). Sophomore Kinsey Smith and freshman Ylame Dsamou lead Davidson in the assists category with 153 assists (5.28 a/s) and 148 assists (5.10 a/s), respectively. Leading the team in digs is senior Jordan Hummel with 120 digs (4.29 d/s). She ranks third in the A10 in digs per set as well as fifth in the league in total digs. Davidson's top blockers are junior Mia Compas (22 total, four solo, 18 assists) and sophomore Cayla Weisner (21 total, six solo, 15 assists). The Wildcats rank second in the conference in assists per set (12.69) and kills per set (13.79), as well as third in digs per set (15.17).
On the Horizon
The Mountaineers will open Sun Belt play with a pair of home matches against James Madison on Sept. 26 and 27. Friday's 6 p.m. match will feature a hard hat giveaway for Diggin' It night. Saturday's 2 p.m. match is Youth Day. There will be free admission for all kids aged 12 and under for Saturday's match.
