BOONE, N.C. - The App State volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 SBC) is set to host Elon in its home opener at the Holmes Convocation Center at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Fans are encouraged to pack Holmes. Additionally, there will be a free t-shirt giveaway for all fans and free food for students. Tuesday's match will also be available to stream on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers opened the 2025 campaign at the C of C Classic in Charleston, S.C. on Aug. 29 and 30. App State started off strong on Friday with a 3-0 sweep against Mercer to mark head coach
Chad Sutton's first win at the helm of the program. The Mountaineers then battled through two five-set thrillers on Saturday, defeating both College of Charleston and Eastern Kentucky, 3-2.
A trio of Mountaineers earned spots on the C of C Classic All-Tournament team, led by senior
Maya Winterhoff, who was named tournament MVP. Winterhoff slammed down 37 kills, averaging 2.85 per set, with a hitting percentage of .456 on the weekend. She also served up eight aces and made 12 blocks (three solo, nine assists). Sophomores
Lou Johnson and
MeMe Davis joined Winterhoff on the all-tournament team for their efforts on the court. Johnson tallied 24 kills (1.85 k/s) on the weekend with a clip of .419. She also made six blocks (two solo, four assists), and made an assist for the Mountaineers. Davis led the team in digs, totaling 49 across the trio of matches, averaging 3.77 digs per set. Additionally, Davis made seven assists, a pair of kills, and served up a pair of aces.
The weekend was also highlighted by a career milestone from redshirt senior
Addison Heidemann, who eclipsed 1,000 collegiate career assists in the Mountaineers' match against College of Charleston. She now has 1,050 assists, 1,015 of which she made at App State. Heidemann totaled 109 assists, averaging 8.38 assists per set, at the C of C Classic. She also made 17 digs, four blocks, four kills, and served up an ace.
Series History vs. Elon
App State has an all-time record of 15-7 against Elon and last met the Phoenix on Nov. 1, 2013. The Mountaineers swept the Phoenix in three sets. Emily Corrigan and Lindsey Sauls combined for 28 kills, while Meghan Mohoney led the team in digs with 25. Paige Brown posted a team-high 38 assists and helped the Mountaineers to a team hitting percentage of .327.
Scouting Elon
Elon (0-2, 0-0 CAA) opened the season with a pair of losses to Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman at the Aggie/Phoenix Invitational on Aug. 29 and 30. Senior Clara Simmons leads Elon in the kills category with 27, averaging 3.86 per set. Following Simmons in the kills category is graduate student Simrin Carlsen, who had 23 kills (2.67 k/s) and leads the team in digs with 42 (4.67 d/s). Freshman April Rice leads the team in assists with 77 (8.56 a/s), while junior Kyla Johnson leads the team with eight. Prior to opening the season, Cameron Lanier, Caroline Berlekamp, and Catherine Rucker earned preseason All-CAA recognition.
On the Horizon
App State will face VCU on Sept. 5 and Virginia on Sept. 6 at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. Both matches are set for 2 p.m. Saturday's match against Virginia will be available to stream on ACCNX.
