KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — App State Men's Golf placed sixth in a 15-team field it hosted for the Irish Creek Collegiate on Monday and Tuesday, led by 10th-place ties from
Aidan Browning and
Herman Huus at 2 over for the 36-hole event.
A rainy Monday turned a 36-hole opening day into an abbreviated and wet 18-hole day on the par-70 layout on The Club at Irish Creek. Browning and Huus both had first-round 70s before closing with 2-over 72s on Tuesday.
Eighth after one round, the Mountaineers recorded a 24-over team total (294-290—584) to finish one shot behind fifth-place Radford. They finished one shot ahead of seventh-place WKU, two shots ahead of eighth-place Lehigh and three shots ahead tying ninth-place teams in a crowded middle pack.
No. 48 Marquette won the team title by 13 strokes over Old Dominion, posting a 5-under total that included a 4-under mark from medalist Vinny Cervantes, who shot a 6-under 64 in the final round to reach a playoff with Charleston Southern's Layne Lambert. Both players made par on the first playoff hole — the par-3 18th — and Cervantes followed with a par on the par-4 first hole before Lambert missed his par putt.
App State's
Alex Martin (77-73—150),
Ben Read (77-73—150) and
Jack Seward (75-75—150 as an individual) all tied for 51st place at 10 over.
Rob Bergevin, also playing as an individual, opened with a 76 and tied for 72nd at 13 over.
Colin Browning shot a first-round 77, a total that counted toward App State's team score, and
Josh Buxbaum came within 2 feet of an ace on the par-3 eighth hole Tuesday.
Charlie O'Shea joined Seward and Bergevin as Mountaineers competing individually.
The 2024-25 season is presented by Hound Ears Club. App State is back in action later this week at the Stitch Intercollegiate, which runs Friday and Saturday in Raleigh.
