CHARLESTON, S.C. — A month removed from a league-opening win away from home, App State Wrestling will face a difficult challenge Sunday when it takes on The Citadel in another SoCon road dual.
The match, which begins at 2 p.m., will be available via ESPN+.
Last year, before the Mountaineers won the SoCon Championship tournament, they finished second and The Citadel took third in the league's regular-season race, as the Bulldogs earned a breakthrough win against Chattanooga en route to a 6-2 conference record.
App State (1-2, 1-0 SoCon) began its 2024-25 league schedule Dec. 12 with a 40-6 victory at VMI, while the only loss to date for The Citadel (3-1, 0-0 SoCon) was a 24-11 setback against Virginia.
There could be one ranked matchup at 197 pounds, where Intermat has The Citadel's Patrick Brophy (13-3 record) at No. 27 and App State's
Carson Floyd (15-4 record) at No. 33. They split two matches last season, with Floyd winning an 8-1 decision during the dual season and Brophy winning a 14-10 decision in the SoCon Championship semifinals.
In App State's three duals to date, the Mountaineers have had the same starter at five weights: Floyd (197),
Luke Uliano (174), No. 8
Will Miller (165),
Kaden Keiser (149) and
Chad Bellis (133). Redshirt freshman
Bryson Terrell (125), redshirt freshman
Jeremiah Price (157) and true freshman
Stephan Monchery (heavyweight) picked up the first dual wins of their careers at VMI, and
Riley Edwards (141) earned his second career dual win at VMI.
In addition to Brophy, The Citadel's top performers so far in the 2024-25 season have been Carson DesRosier (14-3 record at 149), Tyler Padgett (15-4 record at 157), Thomas Snipes (14-6 record at 165), Ben Haubert (9-5 record at 174) and Billy Janzer (5-1 record at 184).
At the Southern Scuffle, the Bulldogs benefited from podium finishes by Brophy (runner-up), Badgett (third place), Snipes (fifth place) and DesRosier (seventh).
Padgett is a Pitt transfer who defeated Price by a 5-3 count at the Scuffle and won in overtime against
Anthony Conetta during the Battle at The Citadel. Janzer topped App State's
Tomas Brooker in the Battle at The Citadel final at 184 pounds, before Brooker suffered a season-ending injury, but the Bulldogs transfer who was a two-time NCAA qualifier at Rutgers last competed in mid-November and isn't listed among the projected starters for Sunday.
The 2024-25 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station.
