BOONE, N.C. - The App State volleyball team has collected the 2024 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT, with a cumulative team GPA of 3.53, the AVCA announced Wednesday. This year marked another record-setting year for the award, as more than 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs maintained a year-long GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale to be eligible for recognition.
App State went 14-15 (4-12 SBC) and 10-4 in Holmes last fall. The Mountaineers tallied nine consecutive victories from Aug. 25 to Sept. 9, which included six sweeps and three five-set victories. In Sun Belt play, the Black and Gold posted back-to-back victories over ULM (Oct. 13 and 14) and notched sweeps against Georgia State (Oct. 7) and Old Dominion (Oct. 26). As the East Division's No. 6 seed, the Mountaineers swept the West Division's No. 7 seed, ULM, in the first round of the SBC Tournament before falling to the West Division's No. 3 seed, Troy, in the second round.
Maya Winterhoff collected her second career Second Team All-SBC honor in addition to Preseason All-SBC recognition last fall. The Charlottesville, Va. native started all 29 matches, led the team with 130 blocks, and led the Sun Belt with a hitting percentage of .383. Winterhoff, a Diverse magazine Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar selection, also collected CSC Academic All-District honors alongside
Sophie Cain,
Lauren Pledger, and
Kenady Roper.
The Mountaineers will start the 2024 season on Aug. 30 and 31 at the Ohio Tournament, before returning to Boone to host the Mountaineer Classic on Sept. 6 and 7 and Black and Gold Invitational on Sept. 12-14. App State will also host eight conference clashes in the Holmes Convocation center this fall.
