Mountaineers Wrap Saturday Action at VMI Winter Classic

LEXINGTON, Va.   The App State women's track and field team rounded out competition at the VMI Winter Classic with 24 top-five finishes on Saturday.
 
"This was a great tune-up for the conference championships," said director of track & field/cross country Damion McLean. "We saw a lot of personal and season bests that we're looking forward to using to challenge us further."
 
Graduate student Alexia Moehling clinched first in the women's 60-meter hurdle final with a time of 8.80.
 
In the women's 800 meters, senior Jasmine Donohue led the pack with a first-place finish and time of 2:16.56. Graduate student Elizabeth Fuller took third (2:18.26, PR), freshman Rhys Ammon took fourth (2:18.30), and sophomores Addison Ollendick-Smith and Lucia Garcia took fifth (2:19.53) and sixth (2:20.44), respectively. Ollendick-Smith also rounded out the top-five in the women's 400 meters with a personal best of 58.06.
 
In the women's triple jump, graduate student Ashlee Osaji landed second with a personal best leap of 12.51m (41' 0.5"). Junior Daiyanna Cooper also recorded a second-place finish with a toss of 13.46m (44' 2") in the women's shot put.
 
In the women's 60-meter final, senior Taylor Smith took second with a time of 7.50. Freshmen Kendall Johnson and Nicole Wells finished third with a personal best of 7.56 and fourth with a personal best of 7.62, respectively. Johnson moved to seventh in the App State all-time list, while Wells rounds out the top-10.
 
Junior Lana Farris clocked a personal best of 10:46.79 to place third in the women's 3,000 meters while senior Bianca Copeman and graduate student Claire Mason took fourth (5:25.93) and fifth (5:28.03, PR), respectively, in the women's mile.
 
Friday Rewind 
Friday's action saw sophomore Ava Studney match the App State indoor pole vault record with a clearance of 4.06m (13' 3.75") to place first. The record was previously set by Suzanne Makinson in 2004. Graduate students Celia Agee and Noelle Meeker took second (3.60m (11' 9.75")) and third (3.45m (11' 3.75")), and sophomore Caroline Fowlkes placed fourth (3.30m (10' 10")).
 
Wells stopped the clock at 39.05 for a personal best and first-place finish in the women's 300 meters. Sophomore Daye Talley secured second with a personal best of 39.55. Wells' time moved her to second in the App State all-time list, while Talley's moved her to fifth.
 
In the women's 5,000 meters, junior Catherine Breault recorded a personal best of 18:08.41 to place first while fellow junior Abby Granberg also clocked a personal best of 18:35.82 to finish third.
 
Cooper posted a season best in the women's weight throw after recording a toss of 16.85m (55' 3.5") to place second overall. 
 
Up Next
App State will compete in the Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 19-20 in Birmingham, Ala. Action on both days will start at 10 a.m. with the multi-events and the meet will be available to stream on ESPN+.
