App State squares off with Wake Forest in Final Preseason Game

BOONE, N.C. – The App State field hockey team will travel to Wake Forest on Sunday to square off against the Demon Deacons in its final preseason game at 1 p.m.

This will be the first of two trips to Winston-Salem for the Mountaineers this season. The Mountaineers will head back to Kentner Stadium on Sep. 10 for a non-conference regular season matchup.

"This will be a really good chance for us to continue to build that connectivity on the field with one another as we continue to put all the pieces together for a full game," head coach Emily Dinsmore said.

The Matchup
  • Who: App State at Wake Forest
  • Where: Kentner Stadium // Winston-Salem, N.C.
  • When: August 20 – 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Mountaineers welcomed the Liberty Flames to Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field for an exhibition match on Friday. The teams competed in a full game before each team practiced shootouts.

18 Mountaineers saw game action against the Flames. Of those 18 players, three made their first appearance in an App State uniform. Noa Ginjaume Matas, Florine Koopman and Sophia Baxter took the field for their first game action in the High Country.

Scouting the Mountaineers
Coming off one of the best seasons in program history that culminated in the program's first-ever MAC championship game appearance, the Mountaineer field hockey team will look to build off recent success under newly minted head coach Emily Dinsmore.

The 2023 Mountaineer squad will feature five players who garnered All-Mac selections in 2022. Fifth-year players Sarah Farrell and Addie Clark earned All-MAC second-team honors, while the trio of Lise Boekaar, Henriette Stegen and Bridget Donovan were named to the All-MAC Freshman team. The 2023 team will also feature eight newcomers to the high country.

The Mountaineers led the MAC in shutouts in 2022 with seven. The defense was anchored by senior defender Grace Ball, who played in every minute of every game last season, and Addie Clark, who finished second in the MAC in both save percentage (0.779) and goals against average (1.09).

Ball and Clark will serve as team captains of the 2023 squad. Ball was a team captain last year, while Clark served as the vice-captain.

Scouting the Demon Deacons
The Demon Deacons finished 15-6 overall in 2022 and played their way to a second-place finish in the ACC, while also earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Coach's Thoughts
"We want to get all the kinks out to give the team an opportunity to build with one another, so this is a really good chance for us to keep building for the regular season," Dinsmore said.

Up Next
The Mountaineers will kick off the 2023 regular season with a matchup against the Towson Tigers on Friday, August 25 in Towson, Md. The game is set to kick off at 4 p.m. and can be streamed on FloSports.
