Mountaineers Host Coastal Carolina This Thursday & Friday

BOONE, N.C. - The App State volleyball team is set to host Sun Belt foe Coastal Carolina on Thursday and Friday at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C. Both matches are slated for 6 p.m. starts and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
 
Season tickets and single match tickets are available here. Group tickets for Family Weekend will also be available at a special rate and can be found here. Both matches will feature a Fan Zone area, which will include a bouncy house on Friday night. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers opened conference action against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. with a pair of matches on Sept. 23 and 24. JMU won both matches with scores of 3-0 each. 
 
So far this fall, senior McCall Denny has tallied 138 kills and is tied with freshman Maya Winterhoff for second on the team in aces (14). Denny is also second on the team in the digs category with 123. Winterhoff leads the Black and Gold in blocks with 50 and is second on the team in kills (113). Junior Sophie Cain is the Mountaineers' leader in assists (273), while senior Sam Bickley holds the lead in aces (16). Freshman Kenady Roper leads the team in digs with 199 on the season. 
 
Winterhoff ranks 14th in the NCAA and first in the SBC in the hitting percentage category (.415). Roper ranks eighth in the SBC in the digs category. In the conference team rankings through all matches, App State ranks sixth in hitting percentage (.222) and digs (738 total, 14.47 average per set). 
 
Scouting Coastal Carolina
The Mountaineers closed out the 2021 regular season with back-to-back matches against the Chanticleers, facing Coastal Carolina in Boone, N.C. (Nov. 11) and Conway, S.C. (Nov. 14). The Chants swept App State, 3-0, on Nov. 11 and won 3-1 on Nov. 14.
 
The Chanticleers are 10-5 (2-0 SBC) this season. Coastal Carolina kicked off the season with three consecutive sweeps in the UNCW Seahawk Classic (Aug. 26-27), shutting out Davidson, Virginia Tech, and UNCW. From Sept. 10 to Sept. 13, the Chants went on a three-match win-streak, defeating UIW (Sept. 10) and College of Charleston (Sept. 10 and Sept. 13). The Chants picked up one last non-conference win on Sept. 16, edging past UAlbany, 3-2, at the Penn State Classic, before opening Sun Belt action with a pair of 3-0 sweeps of Georgia State (Sept. 23 and 24). 
 
Leading the team in kills this fall is Paulina Perez Rosas, who has tallied 153. Brigitta Petrenkio leads the Chants in the assists (460) and aces (26) categories, while Lina Perugini leads the team in digs (239). In the blocks category, Christina Nance has totaled a team-high of 48 on the fall. 
 
Coastal Carolina went 19-9 (12-4 SBC) last fall, posting early wins against Iowa (Aug. 28), Northwestern State (Sept. 3) and UTSA (Sept. 4). The Chanticleers defeated East Carolina, Radford, and UNCW at the Chanticleer Classic (Sept. 9-11) before closing out non-conference action with a pair of losses to No. 14 Florida. Coastal Carolina opened Sun Belt action with eight consecutive wins spanning from Sept. 24 to Oct. 17, defeating Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Troy, South Alabama, ULM and Louisiana before their streak was snapped by Texas State on Oct. 22 in San Marcos, TX. The Chants went on to sweep UT Arlington (Oct. 23) as well as Georgia State (Nov. 7). In the Sun Belt Championship, the No. 2 seeded Chanticleers swept No. 3 seed Louisiana (Nov. 19) before falling to No. 1 seed Texas State in the semifinals (Nov. 20).

The Mountaineers will hit the road for their next four matches, as they clash with Georgia State on Oct. 6 and 7 in Atlanta, Ga. before heading to Monroe, La. to challenge ULM on Oct. 14 and 15.
