GREENSBORO, N.C. - App State baseball was upended by UNCG 5-0 on Saturday, dropping its third-straight game for the first time this season.
UNCG (3-3) plated a run in the first, two in the third and two in seventh en route to its 5-0 game-two win against App State (2-4). The Spartans clinched the weekend series against the Mountaineers in Saturday's win.
App State recorded five hits on the day, three from the bottom of the order.
In the two-hole, Hayden Cross connected on his fourth double in the last two games. Austin St. Laurent connected on a two-out triple in the top of the ninth.
On the mound, Xander Hamilton earned his second starting nod of the year. Hamilton tossed 7.0 innings and reached a career high in strikeouts with 11, tying the most strikeouts by a Mountaineer in a single game since 2013.
Hamilton (1-1) would also surrender five runs, 10 hits and walked five in the loss.
The Mountaineer pitching staff has allowed double-digit hits in back-to-back contests as three Spartans record multiple hits Saturday.
Offensively, App State left a total of eight Mountaineers on the bases, including stranding the bases loaded in the top of the first.
The Black and Gold will look to avoid the series sweep against the Spartans on Sunday. Sunday's first pitch has been moved back to 2 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium due to impending weather.
Game three will not be streamed on ESPN+.
