Box Score Boone, N.C. - App State women's soccer picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 3-0 victory on Thursday evening against UNC Asheville at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
App State moved to 1-0 with its first season-opening win since a 3-1 triumph over Northern Kentucky in 2016.
The Mountaineers dominated ball possession for majority of the contest, and got on the board when Kirsten Seeley tallied a score in the 23 minute of the first period, while Stephanie Barbosa earned the assist for her first collegiate point.
Highlighting the match was Addie Cooper's first career goal in the 34th minute thanks to a nifty assist from Sarah Widderich to give the Black and Gold a 2-0 edge going into the break. A sprinting Cooper came in to meet the pass and fired off the attempt.
Hayley Boyles got in on the action in the 14th minute of the second period as she found the top-left corner of the net after Widderich found the junior for her second helper of the evening.
Kerry Eagleston made the start between the posts for the Mountaineers, earning her ninth career clean sheet in the shutout while stopping one shot attempt by UNC Asheville. Eagleston is now three shutouts away from tying Emma White (2006-09) for fourth all-time in program history.
"This group is always great, they're a family and the believe in each other," head coach Sarah Strickland said. "The one thing we said before we left the locker room was that we believe in you, and we told individuals you've got this and we trust you, and go and have fun. It was fun to watch them play loose and be excited."
The Black and Gold is now on an eight-match win streak against the Bulldogs, including a combined score of 11-0 over the last three meetings. App State is 12-8-1 in the all-time series.
App State returns to action on Sunday against Charlotte at 6 p.m. at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The home match against the 49ers is the first of eight home matches that will be streamed on ESPN+
