OAKMONT & VERONA, Pa. — Putting together the best back-nine or front-nine performance in the entire 312-player field this week,
Timothius Tirto Tamardi closed his U.S. Amatuer appearance with fellow App State golfer
Ryan Marter by shooting a 5-under 29 over his final nine holes Wednesday.
Tamardi posted the only sub-30 side out of 1,242 sets of nine holes completed in the two rounds of stroke play at the Oakmont Country Club and Longue Vue Club. He recorded six birdies over his last nine holes at Longue Vue and had a 3-under 67 thanks to seven total birdies (including six in a seven-hole stretch).
Before darkness suspended weather-delayed play Tuesday, Tamardi finished the front nine with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole. He began play Wednesday morning with four straight birdies (par-3 10th, par-4 11th, par-3 12th, par-4 13th) before making a par at No. 14 and adding another birdie on the par-5 15th. He closed his round with a final birdie on the par-4 18th hole.
With one of the best bounce-back showings at the U.S. Amateur, Tamardi joined Marter in posting 10-over totals of 150 in the stroke play portion of the event. Marter opened play Monday with a 4-over 74 that included three birdies, and he added two more birdies in a round of 76 over the next two days.
Tamardi, making his first career U.S. Amateur appearance, tied for the 11th-best round of the day on Wednesday. Marter was playing in the U.S. Amateur for the third time.
Of the 57 golfers who advanced to match play, Mark Goetz posted an 8-under 132 to lead the way in stroke play.
