BOONE, N.C. — App State Wrestling had five student-athletes named to the Southern Conference's Academic All-Conference team for the second straight year.
With the Mountaineers posting the second-highest total in the league, head coach
JohnMark Bentley's program was represented on the list by
Anthony Brito,
Michael Burchell,
Thomas Flitz,
Will Formato and
Caleb Smith.
To be eligible, student-athletes had to carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA at the conclusion of the spring semester and meet participation requirements during the 2020-21 season. Additionally, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
All five of the honored wrestlers from App State posted a winning record and registered cumulative GPAs above a 3.3, highlighted by a 3.70 from Formato, the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year. Formato, Flitz and Brito all qualified for the NCAA Championships.
As a team, the Mountaineers posted a collective GPA over 3.0 for the 2021 spring semester and have a cumulative GPA of 3.18.
