Black History Month - Daryn Armstrong

In recognition of Black History Month, App State Athletics is featuring different student-athletes and the people that came before them that made them who they are today. Today's feature is on Daryn Armstrong, a junior on the volleyball team.

Who was your role model growing up?

Growing up, I spent most of my time in the gym as I was a competitive gymnast. My first role model in the sport was Gabby Douglas, who was a member of the Olympic team in 2012. I looked up to her because not only was she incredible, but she also looked like me and that was rare in the sport of gymnastics.

I have wanted to follow in my mom's footsteps for the longest time. She is a physician and that in itself is a huge feat. On top of that, she is a mom of four and in my opinion, superwoman. She pushes me to do my best in all aspects and I can only strive for all that she has accomplished.

Who would you consider a trailblazer in your sport, either here at App State or nationally? What have you learned from that trailblazer?

I started playing volleyball at the age of 15, so I don't know of many volleyball players, but I would definitely consider Makini Thompson to be a trailblazer in both volleyball as well as for black women. She was an All-American and is now a Senior Associate Athletics Director. Again, it is rare to see a person of color, let alone a female in this position. She exudes with kindness, but also confidence and she inspires me to work towards success.

What impact do you hope to leave here that could help benefit future generations?

When I leave, I hope my teammates will remember me as hardworking, caring, and someone who found her voice. I hope that by speaking on issues that are not always talked about or having conversations that are not the easiest, I will empower them to use their voices for whatever they are passionate about.

How has your family influenced your athletic career?

My dad played Division I football at UNC and is very athletic. Sports are one of the things that we bond over. My family is also a very competitive one and we all hate losing. I believe that it is because of my parents that I love sport, but my three younger siblings motivate me to continue striving for excellence in sport.
