MOBILE, ALA. – The App State softball team took its second straight loss to South Alabama Saturday afternoon, falling 13-9. The Jaguars used another big sixth inning to tally their second conference win.
South Alabama now sits at 8-15 (2-0 SBC). App State falls to 11-9 (0-2 SBC).
The game started as a back and forth battle, with the Mountaineers scoring in the top of the first off of
Baylee Morton's fifth home run of the season. The Jaguars quickly answered, hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Both teams would remain scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Jaguars scored two runs on three walks and a single. With two outs,
Maddie Siemer came into relieve starter
Sydney Holland. Siemer would work out of the inning with a line out to third base.
Taylor Thorp's first home run of the season would start the rally in the top of the fourth as the Mountaineers tied the game up at 4-4. Following Thorp's home run, Russell reached base on a walk and was moved to second on a ground out to first, and third on a wild pitch.
Delaney Smith reached base on a walk and both batters were brought home by a triple from
Gabby Buruato.
App State took the lead in the top of the fifth, with Parrott starting the rally by reaching base on an error by the first baseman. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Keri White and brought home by a double from Morton.
The top of the sixth would see two more runs from the Mountaineers as
Caylie Kifer opened the inning with a single. Smith reached on a fielder's choice and both runners were moved over on a sac bunt from Buruato. Parrott singled to first base, scoring both.
Walks would be the downfall for the Mountaineers in the sixth, as the first four out of five batters were walked to score the first one for the Jaguars.
Camryn Brazile came on in relief of Siemer with one out and would give up two singles and three walks for five more South Alabama runs.
After the five runs,
Taylor Nichols entered the game as the fourth pitcher for the Mountaineers. Two errors would score another two for the Jaguars before ending the sixth.
The Mountaineers battled in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs off of a passed ball and a single from
Mary Pierce Barnes, but it was not enough as a fielder's choice would end the game.
Siemer (0-1) received the loss in the circle, giving up four runs on one hit and six walks.
App State returns to action tomorrow, taking on South Alabama in the final game of the series in Mobile. First pitch is set for Noon C.T.
