MOBILE, ALA. – The App State softball team tallied its first Sun Belt win on Sunday afternoon, defeating South Alabama, 5-2. The Mountaineers are now 12-9 (1-2 SBC). The Jaguars fall to 8-16 (2-1 SBC).
App State used runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take the win.
Kenzie Longanecker received the win in the circle for the Mountaineers, giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks. The senior is now 4-5 on the season.
Caylie Kifer scored the first one for the Mountaineers, reaching base on a fielder's choice. She stole second and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.
South Alabama answered in the bottom of the second, scoring on an error by third base as well. The Mountaineers took the lead back in the third as
Sidney Russell scored
Baylee Morton who reached base on a walk.
The fourth inning would be the difference, with the Mountaineers scoring three runs to take the win.
Delaney Smith hit the first home run of her career to start the rally and give the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead.
Taylor Thorp would score the next two runs off an RBI double to center field.
South Alabama was able to score one more in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single to right field. The runner reached base on an error so it would go down as another unearned run. Both runs scored against Longanecker would go down as unearned. The Mountaineer defense would hold the Jaguars scoreless for the remainder of the game to take the victory.
Jenna Hardy (2-6) received the loss in the circle for South Alabama, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks in her three innings of work. Jamie Finnical threw one inning, giving up three runs off three hits and two walks. Kelsie Rivers threw the final three, giving up no runs and walking one.
App State continues its road trip on Wednesday, making the trip to Hammond, La. take on Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.
