Box Score BOONE, N.C. - App State women's tennis captured its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Campbell on Monday afternoon at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Apps are now 1-2 after handing Campbell its first loss of the season, falling to 2-1. Appalachian has won its last nine matches at home and is 9-1 over the last 10 contests in Boone.
The trio of
Sandra Anglesjö,
Virginia Poggi and
María José Zacarias claimed a singles and doubles win.
App State wasted no time in getting off to a solid start as it picked up the doubles point.
Anglesjö and Poggi started things off when it dealt Inma Ramon and Alexandra Nicoara a 6-1 loss in the No. 2 slot. Clinching the point was
Cassie McLay and Zacarias, downing Ana Castillo/Lea Cutura with a 6-2 victory.
Kate Earnhardt and
Selina Atay were up on their opponent, 4-3, but the match went unfinished.
Earnhardt gave the Black and Gold a 2-0 advantage when she topped Cutura in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
After Campbell took the point at No. 3 singles to cut the deficit to 2-1, the hosts claimed the next four singles matches.
Sasha Pisareva stayed undefeated in singles in the top spot when she picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win over Castillo. Bringing home the clinching point was Angelsjö, finishing a solid day after she posted a 6-4, 6-2 win against Ciara O'Toole.
Zacarias earned a hard-fought three-set win over Lucile Pons, 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9), while ending the day was Poggi, who won over her counterpart, 6-4, 7-6.
App State will have nine days off before its next contest against UNCG in a home affair at 11 a.m. on Feb. 11.
