DURHAM, N.C. -- After opening the 2019 season in Arizona last weekend, Appalachian State volleyball will head to the Duke Invitational for its second tournament of the season. The Mountaineers will battle UNCW at 10 a.m. and Wofford at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by a meeting with the host Blue Devils on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. All three contests can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
- App State posted a 1-2 record at the Cactus Classic last weekend, topping Samford and falling to No. 24 Arizona and Loyola Marymount
- Two Mountaineers posted over 30 kills during the opening weekend of play. Emma Longley tallied a team-high 38 kills (3.17 k/s), while Kara Spicer recorded 34 (2.83 k/s). Spicer is also hitting a team-best .412 on the season
- Longley recorded two double-doubles last weekend, tallying 12 kills and 11 digs against Samford and 13 kills and 11 digs versus LMU
- On defense, Spicer recorded a team-best eight blocks with Sam Bickley, Amya Giger and Longley each posting four
- Emma Reilly recorded 64 total digs (5.33 d/s) last weekend, including two contests of 20 or more. Reilly now has 970 digs in her career and is just 30 shy of reaching 1,000
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
- UNCW enters play on the weekend a perfect 4-0. The Seahawks posted a 3-0 record and the UNCW Hampton Inn Invitational, defeating North Florida 3-1, Charleston Southern 3-0 and Duquense 3-0. The Seahawks also posted a 3-2 win at Campbell on Tuesday
- In the victory on Tuesday over Campbell, Brynn Montgomery posted the first triple-double for the program since 2003, finishing with 11 kills, 20 assists and 11 digs
- Madison Peter has recorded a team-high 36 kills (2.40 k/s), with Kendall Bender right behind with 32 kills (2.13 k/s)
- On defense, Anna Weissmann had 67 digs (4.47 d/s), with Kyla Augustine totaling 41 digs (2.73 d/s)
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
- Wofford enters the weekend with an 0-3 mark, after dropping a trio of contests at the Clemson Tournament last weekend
- Catie Cronister leads the team with 18 kills (2.00 k/s), with Kennedy Smith and Meghan Yaffa each with 17 (1.89 k/s). Yaffa is also hitting a team-high .297
- Riley Coonan has a team-best 10 blocks (1.25 b/s), with Emily Durham tallying a team-high 22 digs (2.44 d/s)
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
- Duke comes into the weekend with a 1-2 mark. The Blue Devils fell to Michigan State and top ranked Stanford last weekend, but topped Charlotte 3-0 on Tuesday
- Ade Owokobiran tallied 14 kills and hit .312 in the win over Charlotte for the Blue Devils. She leads the team with 45 kills (5.62 k/s) and is hitting .270 on the season
- On defense, Mackenzie Cole has a team-high 41 digs (4.10 d/s), with Payton Schwantz right behind with 33 (3.30 d/s)
- Camille Nazor has dished out 67 assists (7.44 a/s) on the season
THE SERIES
- App State holds a 10-7 lead in the all-time series against UNCW. The two teams last meet in 2017, with App State posting a 3-1 win in Wilmington
- The Mountaineers lead the all-time series against Wofford 19-7. The two squads last squared off in 2016, with Wofford posting a 3-2 win in Boone
- Duke holds a 7-3 lead in the 10 meetings with the Black and Gold. App State fell to the Blue Devils 3-1 in the last meeting between the two teams in 2009
UP NEXT
The Black and Gold will travel to Clemson on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Tigers. App State will then host the Appalachian Invitational from Sept. 12 to Sept. 14, hosting Western Carolina, Iowa State and N.C. State in the Holmes Center.
