BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State men's basketball program will host a Tip-Off Dinner of Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Room of the Plemmons Student Union.
Tickets to the event are $100 per person and $25 per person for children under 12 years old.
A ticket to the dinner includes a buffet meal, a Q & A with the 2019-20 team, a Q & A with head coach
Dustin Kerns and the coaching staff, a preview of the upcoming season and remarks from guest speaker and App State alum Matt McMahon.
McMahon, a 2000 graduate of Appalachian State, played for four seasons under Buzz Peterson and was a member of the 1999-00 squad that appeared in the NCAA Tournament. McMahon also served an assistant coach for the Mountaineers from 2002-10 and currently is the head coach of Murray State. In four seasons, McMahon has guided the Racers to an 87-42 (.674) record and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
"In my opinion, Matt McMahon is a legend to App State and the Boone community," said head coach
Dustin Kerns. "He has had amazing accomplishments and is one of the stars of the coaching profession. He is exactly a person that we want graduates of App State and our program to represent when they leave here."
McMahon has led Murray State to back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships and a win over Marquette in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. In addition, Murray State is sixth in the entire country is winning percentage over the last two seasons (.831, 54-11) while also claiming the third fewest losses in the country behind Virginia and Gonzaga during that span. McMahon recruited and coached Ja Morant, who went on to become the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Morant was the first player in NCAA history to average 20 or more points and 10 or more assists per game in a season.
"Matt is a man of character, a great husband and father who strives for excellence in his personal and professional life," added Kerns. "We strive for our student-athletes to be role models and Matt has provided a great example for Appalachian State University and our program. We are thrilled to be able to bring him back to kick off our basketball season."
Space for the event is limited.
