DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (8-6) got back on the winning track with a 4-1 triumph over Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday afternoon in Daytona Beach.
Appalachian snaps a season-long three-match skid while it's the third road win of the season. The Mountaineers recorded the doubles point, and three of the four finished singles matches to capture the win.
Claiming their first win as a tandem was
Alex Brea and
Alexander Free in the early goings of the doubles portion, downing Phillip Lynch and David Ocampo, 6-3. Clinching the point to give App a 1-0 edge was
Scott Webster and
Milo Bargeron. The now 8-3 pairing defeated Victor Bravo and Jose Plazas, 6-3, to hand App the momentum it needed for singles.
Bargeron continued his solid outing on the day and gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 advantage with a straight-set, 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Ocampo as the No. 3 in the lineup. Scott secured his fifth straight singles win when he downed Bravo, 6-2, 6-3, and improved to 9-3 on the season.
Campbell Stone was the next to finish but fell to Juan Navarro, 6-1, 6-4. The Wildcats cut the deficit to 3-1, but
Alex Pavkovich had other plans when he clinched the match, 6-2, 6-4, to earn his eighth win of the season. The sophomore for the Black and Gold surpassed last season's win total and is boasting a career-high eight wins and counting.
Ben Webster fell in the first set to Plazas, 2-6, before forcing a third frame with a 6-2, but the match was unfinished.
Blake Carter's match went unfinished as well. Carter was on his way to a seventh win as he was ahead, 7-6 (7-0), 3-1.
Pavkovich and Ben's doubles match went unfinished as well with a 5-4 lead over Navarro and Juan Diego Ruiz.
The Mountaineers are now 46-35 (.568) in singles and 21-15 (.586) in doubles action.
Appalachian will return to action on Friday, March 16 against College of Charleston at 2 p.m.
