BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis (6-4) cracked the top-100 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings for the first time since the 2013 season.
Appalachian is ranked No. 90 in the nation according to the ITA rankings after coming off a dominant 7-0 win over the College of Charleston on Sunday, which was Appalachian's first win over CofC since 2000.
Sunday's win marked the first three-match winning streak since the 2015 season to improve to 6-4 through 10 matches. Head coach
Blake Mosley continues a successful turnaround with the Mountaineers surpassing last season's win total.
Appalachian's last two wins have come over opponents with a combined 11-6 record. The Mountaineers have been impressive against in-state opponents outscoring their North Carolina foes by a combined score of 21-6.
Doubles play has propelled the Mountaineers into winning situations throughout the season. The team's 17-8 record (.680) includes six different pairings with at least one victory. The tandem of
Melissa Machado and
Teodora Sevo has won four-straight matches and leads App with an 8-2 record.
In singles competition,
María José Zacarias,
Teodora Sevo, and
Taylor Bygrave are tied for the team lead in victories with six apiece. Seven Mountaineers are currently riding winning streaks with four players winning their last three matches.
In 2013, the Mountaineers won 14 matches and made it all the way up to No. 65 in the nation.
This year's squad looks to stay undefeated at home when they host Radford on Friday at 2 p.m.
