ELON, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis (6-3) suffered a 7-0 setback to Elon (3-4) on Sunday afternoon.
The Phoenix claimed the doubles point, and all six singles matches.
Alex Pavkovich and
Ben Webster suffered a 6-2 setback to Felipe Sarrasague and Salvador Mirajes as the No. 2 duo in the lineup. Elon clinched when
Campbell Stone and
Alex Brea fought valiantly in a 6-4 decision to Taylor Foote and Camilo Ponce.
Scott Webster and
Milo Bargeron were tied in a 6-6 showdown against Neal Port/Mario Paccini, but the match would go unfinished.
Appalachian looked to get back into the match in singles play trailing 1-0, but couldn't get the momentum going. Stone fell to Felipe Osses-Konig 6-1, 6-2 before Ben was downed 6-3, 6-0, as the No. 2 in the lineup.
Blake Carter, who was seeking a 5-0 start, fought back from a one-set deficit against Louis Rico to force a third and final frame. However, Carter fell in the final stanza and the match 1-6, 6-2, 2-6.
After falling in the first stanza, 6-0, Bargeron gave Kyle Frankel all he could handle in the second set despite dropping the frame in a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreak. Pavkovich fell in the first set, 6-2, before going into a tiebreak decision 7-6 (7-3) to Ponce.
Ending the day for the Black and Gold was Scott. The senior netted the first frame, 7-5, before Sarrasague claimed the second stanza, 6-4, to force a 10-point tiebreak. Scott fell in the final set, 1-0 (10-3).
Appalachian will look to rebound next Saturday at home against UNC Asheville with the first serve set for 12 p.m. The Mountaineers have yet to drop a home contest with a 3-0 mark and are 22-5 in their last 27 home matches dating back to the 2015 campaign.
