Men's Basketball Readies for Monday Contest Against Winston-Salem State

BOONE, N.C. -- After four games away from home, Appalachian State men's basketball returns to the Holmes Center on Monday evening against Winston-Salem State at 7 p.m.

THE SERIES
  • This will be the third all-time meeting between the two schools.
  • The two teams met twice during the 1970-71 season, with the Rams posting a 87-79 win in Winston-Salem and a 84-81 victory in Boone.
LAST TIME OUT
  • App State dropped a 94-86 overtime decision to Ball State in its final game of the Charleston Classic on Nov. 18.
  • The Mountaineers overcame an 11-point deficit in the final 2:43 of regulation to force overtime. Ball State answered with the first 11 points in the extra session to hang on for the victory.
  • Ronshad Shabazz poured in a career-high 37 points, going 12-of-20 (60.0 percent) from the field, 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from deep and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. His 12 made field goals were just one off his career-best of 13, set in the 2016-17 season against Georgia Southern.
  • Justin Forrest added 12 points and five rebounds, while Tyrell Johnson had a season-high 10 points and pulled down a season-best seven rebounds.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • Appalachian State stands at 1-4 on the season.
  • As a team, the Mountaineers are averaging 86.0 points, which ranks 27th in the nation. In addition, the Black and Gold are shooting 42.6 percent on three-pointers, which sits 21st in the country.
  • Ronshad Shabazz is averaging a team-high 19.2 points and leads the team with 16 assists. He was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 21.0 points and dishing out 10 total assists.
  • Shabazz is just 17 points shy of passing Rick Howe (1,593) for eighth place on the all-time scoring list. 
  • Justin Forrest is also averaging double figures for App State at 18.2 points. He is shooting 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from deep this season, which ranks 27th in the nation.
  • With an appearance in tonight's game, both Tyrell Johnson and Shabazz will have played in 100 games for the Mountaineers.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
  • Winston-Salem State improved to 2-2 on the season with a 109-88 home victory over Morris on Tuesday.
  • Robert Colon led the Rams with 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Jamel McAllister had a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Mason Harrell added 21 points off the bench.
  • Colon leads three players averaging double figures at 16.3 ppg. William Crandell (13.0) and McAllister (11.8) are also averaging double figure scoring.
  • McAllister is averaging a team-high 9.5 rebounds and has pulled down at least seven rebounds in each game this season.
UP NEXT
Appalachian State will play next on Friday evening at 7 p.m. versus East Carolina. The Mountaineers will follow that with two straight home games against Howard on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. and North Carolina Central on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
