About the Mountaineers
Appalachian scored five goals this past weekend, but it was not enough to power the Mountaineers past Saint Francis and No. 16 Wake Forest. On Friday, the Black and Gold hosted Saint Francis, falling to the visiting Red Flash 3-2 in overtime. Appalachian jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off of a solo goal from freshman
Friederike Stegen. After Saint Francis responded with a pair of scores, sophomore
Veerle Van Heertum knotted the game at 2-2 in the second half, sending the contest into overtime. Van Heertum finished Friday's game with eight shots, four shots on target and a crafty goal from the top left of the circle. Two days later, the Mountaineers traveled to No. 16 Wake Forest, where Appalachian fell 8-3 to the Demon Deacons. The Black and Gold recorded three second-half goals. Junior
Melissa Nobile, Van Heertum and Stegen notched the three Appalachian goals. Van Heertum's parents traveled across the Atlantic to see the Valkenswaard, Netherlands native play this past weekend, and the sophomore impressed with ten total shots, five shots on goal, two goals and an assist. Sophomore
Annette Jarosz made another defensive save Sunday, bringing her season total to four. The stop helped her maintain her conference lead in the category while also moving her into third place in Mountaineers' history with nine career defensive saves.
Scouting Central Michigan (1-13, 0-4 MAC)
