BOONE, N.C. Appalachian State University men's tennis (3-1) finished the weekend with a 3-0 mark after sweeping Lees-McRae (0-1) and North Carolina A&T (0-4) with a pair of 7-0 victories on Sunday at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers were impressive across the board as they won five of six doubles matches and captured all 12 singles contests through the two matches. App State received numerous contributions from everyone including the three freshmen
Spencer Brown,
Blake Carter and
Ben Webster going unblemished through the two matches. Ben didn't lose a single point in his singles contests while capturing both clinching points in doubles action. Brown would record both singles-clinching points in each win, and Carter won his first-career victory en route to going 2-0 in both singles and doubles.
Alex Pavkovich continued his hot start with his third and fourth straight wins to boast a 4-0 mark after the weekend.
Milo Bargeron didn't lose a singles match as well while playing as the No. 1 and No. 2 in the lineup, respectively. Cambell Stone also stayed hot in the first four matches of the season as he ends the weekend on a three-match win streak.
App State 7, Lees-McRae 0
In doubles competition, the Mountaineers (2-1) swept the Bobcats (0-1) to jump out to an early 1-0 advantage with Ben and Pavkovich picking up the defining doubles match point, winning 6-2 over Gabriel Muniz and Sebastian Zuhr.
Alex Brea and Carter started off things with a convincing 6-1 win over Brandon Caldwell, and Colton Porter as the third pairing in the lineup before the top tandem gave App a 1-0 lead going into singles play. Brown and Stone teamed up as the No. 2 in the list where they dealt Matt Meluch and Rusty Batten a 6-4 defeat.
The Mountaineers dominated the singles competition as well, clinching each match in straight-set victories with Brown securing the Appalachian triumph after defeating Meluch 6-1, 6-2. Ben gave App a 2-0 lead with his straight-set victory over Zuhr as the No. 2 before Bargeron won his first matchup as the No. 1 in the lineup, defeating Muniz, 6-4, 6-3 to give App a 3-0 edge.
After Brown had clinched the match point for App, Pavkovich won his then-third straight singles contest, notching a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rusty Batten. Carter earned his first career victory, dropping only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Caldwell as the No. 5 in the group. Stone ended the contest as he rolled past Porter in a 6-1, 6-0 victory to complete the clean sweep.
App State 7, North Carolina A&T 0
The Mountaineers completed their second shutout but needed some hard-fought wins to do so. Appalachian State captured the doubles point and would eventually pick up the four singles matches it required. Pavkovich won a marathon of a game that went on for more than three hours, where he earned both of his sets in a tiebreak. The sophomore dealt his counterpart a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win. Stone ended the day in a long match as well, as he won a tiebreak over Goenaga.
Appalachian will look for its fourth straight win when it faces North Carolina Central at 3 p.m. on Friday in Boone.
