Box Score BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University field hockey dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 19 James Madison on Friday night in Harrisonburg, Va.
Goalkeeper Rachel Gaines made four saves before the Dukes opened the scoring in the 29th minute on a goal by Alicia Cooperman. In the final five minutes of the first half, the Mountaineers kept much of the action on JMU's side of the field. Michelle Taylor had two shots blocked and Kaley Selner had a shot saved by the Dukes goalkeeper to end the half 1-0.
The Dukes supplied more pressure at the net in the second half with seven shots in the first 15 minutes, but Gaines made three saves to keep the JMU lead at just one goal. JMU would add to its lead with two goals separated by just 16 seconds in the 54th minute.
Just two minutes later, the Mountaineers had two scoring opportunities with back-to-back penalty corners. Taylor was able to send one shot toward the net, but the Duke defense blocked it away.
James Madison would score its final goal of the match in the 69th minute and run away with the match 4-0.
The Dukes commanded much of the offense with 25 shots to Appalachian's 8. The Mountaineers had the advantage in penalty corners with five to JMU's three. Gaines accumulated 11 saves in the match.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. matchup against Lafayette in Harrisonburg.
