BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University field hockey begins a new era as an affiliate member in the Mid-American Conference when it opens the 2017 campaign at La Salle. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Friday at Hank Devincent Field in Philadelphia.
Following the La Salle match, the Mountaineers will head to Washington, D.C., to face Georgetown on Sunday, Aug. 27. The matchup with the Hoyas will begin at 1 p.m.
App State split a pair of weekend exhibition matches in preparation for the season opener. In the first match on Aug. 18, the Mountaineers dropped a 5-1 decision to Wake Forest. Just two days later, Melissa Nobile had a two-goal performance to lead the Apps in a 3-1 victory over Davidson.
The Mountaineers return nine starters from last year's roster including its top-four goal scorers in Nobile, Taylor Cimbalist, Rebecca McLean and Ali Williams. Nobile had a team-high six goals while Cimbalist finished right behind her with five goals of her own. Both McLean and Williams scored three goals.
McLean also led App State defensively by making a team-high three defensive saves. The senior defender was followed by Keighly Adams, Kaley Selner and Savanna Sheridan as each made two defensive saves apiece. In goal for every match last season was Rachel Gaines who recorded 119 saves on the year – good for 12 nationally.
La Salle went 8-9 last season with a 4-4 mark in Atlantic 10 conference play while the Georgetown Hoyas went 0-7 in the Big East with a 5-13 overall record. In last year's meeting against Georgetown, the Apps fell 4-3 in an overtime loss in Boone.
