Women's Cross Country Takes Second at Conference

November 2, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. – Appalachian State University women's cross country claimed second-place at the Sun Belt Conference championships on Sunday. App State finished behind UT Arlington.

"It was a tough loss today," said head coach Michael Curcio. "These ladies had been running well all season long. Van Ord put in a great effort, but Stefanoff from Georgia State was focused and got the jump on Van Ord with about a half mile to go. Stocks finished her career with her fastest time for 10th place."

Curcio continued, "We packed up well with Cox, Howell and Moser all within 13 seconds of Stocks. The UT Arlington ladies lost a hard fought race last fall to Arkansas State. They came off the line hard and stayed packed in tight to hold on and we just couldn't break through."

The Mountaineers were led again by Tristin Van Ord who finished second overall individually with a personal best time of 17:02. The time beat her previous personal record (PR) by nearly 40 seconds.

Justine Stocks finished 10th overall for the Apps and ran a personal-best time of 17:31. That time is a PR for Stocks and beats her previous record by 31 seconds.

Dana Cox, Shelby Howell and Torre Moser all finished with each other in 15th, 16th and 17th, respectively. Cox finished in a personal-best time of 17:40, which was 34 seconds faster than her previous PR.

Howell destroyed her previous PR by over one minute and finished in 17:43. Moser joined Howell in beating her previous PR by over one minute and finished in a time of 17:43.

The Apps earned three all-conference selections with Van Ord being named to the first-team, while Stocks earned second-team honors and Cox was named to the third-team.

The Mountaineers will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 8 when they travel to Raleigh, N.C. for the Three Stripe Invitational.
