BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis stretched its home winning streak to six matches, and picked up its fourth-straight win overall, with a convincing 5-1 victory over visiting North Carolina Central on Sunday at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (6-3) swept doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead over the Eagles (1-5) and rode the wave of momentum into singles play as they moved to a sterling 6-1 at home this season.
Appalachian's top doubles pairing of Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure picked up an easy 6-3 win while the No. 2 tandem of Megan Mullen and Melissa Machado clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory. NC Central's No. 3 team of Lynsey Cover and Jamie Rogers put up a solid effort, but it was the Mountaineer duo of McKayla Zupan and Gabrielle Wreder that came out on top (7-6).
Singles play started with a win at No. 3 for the Eagles, which tied the match at 1-1. The Apps rebounded and rolled to four-straight singles wins to put NC Central away. LaSure was the first to secure a point in singles play thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 2 while Cox followed with a hard-fought, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Wreder clinched the match-winning fourth point when she earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot. Machado finished off her opponent at No. 5 in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) and Mullen led her opponent, 2-1, at No. 6 in a match that went unfinished.
