Caudle Nets Golden Goal in Double Overtime Victory
October 10, 2014
BOONE, N.C. – Senior Jenna Caudle scored the most impressive goal of her soccer career on Friday night to lift Appalachian State University women's soccer over Troy by a final of 3-2 in double overtime.
With the game tied at 2-2, Caudle was in the right place at the right time when Lindsey Tully made a cross into the box right in front of the net. The senior headed the ball in perfectly to give the Mountaineers the victory.
"Tully was trying to look for me all game and she played a perfect ball in," said Caudle. "That goal is all for my teammates. We wanted that so bad – it was one of the best moments of my life. There is nothing like running at your team after scoring the winning goal. It was such a team effort and all three goals were absolutely beautiful. We're a team that doesn't give up. Every single person was battling and we did not let their two goals define the game."
"We just stayed consistent with the things that we were asking them to do. We told them to continue to work and high pressure them while relaxing in the box and opportunities would come," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "Jenna's finish was just willing the ball into the net and was just absolute heart – that's what she's known for."
Strickland continued, "Tully's cross was incredible, but making sure that Jenna was on that back post is what we kept talking about. I think they believed that they were going to win. The sideline was incredible and the crowd was amazing."
The Mountaineers (6-7, 3-1 Sun Belt) battled all game long and were rewarded with the excitement of a golden goal in the second overtime period. The Apps struck first in the match with Nicole Steyl scoring her first of the season off of a free kick on the near side. It was in the 20th minute that Steyl bent a free kick and placed it perfectly in the back right side of the net.
With 51 seconds to go until halftime, the Apps would increase their lead to 2-0 when Leah Drawdy ripped a shot from 25 yards out off of a pass from Sarah Moon to take the momentum into the locker room. The goal for Drawdy was her second of the season.
With App State in command most of the first half, Troy then came out in the second half determined to tie the game. In the 60th minute, Abby Reynolds brought the Trojans to within one goal off of a Chelsey Williams rebounded shot off a Megan Roberson save.
Roberson made four saves in the game and kept the lead and tie in tact many times in the second half.
Just over two minutes later, Troy was gifted a penalty kick and Chelsey Williams was able to bury the equalizer to bring the score to 2-2.
Both sides would get more aggressive and physical as the second half would play on. The Mountaineers wouldn't stray from their style of play and it ended up paying off in the end.
Troy would outshoot Appalachian 18-15, but App State would put seven shots on goal to Troy's six. Both teams attempted five corner kicks in the match.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 when they host Sun Belt foe South Alabama. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
