BOONE N.C. – App State Soccer will continue to face in-state opponents to begin the season as the team travels down the mountain to Boiling Springs, N.C. to battle Gardner Webb on Saturday. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
App State (1-1-1) enters the contest off a scoreless draw against Western Carolina on Thursday. The Mountaineers governed most of the match, outshooting the Catamounts 11-3 and holding a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks. Senior
Olivia Simon led the Mountaineers with four shots. Prior to Thursday's draw, App State earned its first win of the season at Campbell last Sunday, scoring three goals in the second half - the first from
Reagan Sturgill, followed by a brace from
Libby Bermingham.
Hanna Skogsfors matched a career-high with six saves in that outing. She has played the full 90 minutes in all three matches in goal. Defenders
Maddie Williams and
Lucy Harrington and midfielder
Taylor Duff have also not come off the field for the Mountaineers this season.
Gardner-Webb (2-0) is unbeaten through two matches this season with wins over Queens and Emory & Henry. The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by first year head coach Samantha Thomsit. In Thursday's 5-0 win over the Division II Wasps, all five Gardner-Webb goals were scored by underclassmen. Freshman goalie Abril Montiel recorded four saves. The Runnin' Bulldogs outshot the Wasps 18-7. Gardner-Webb was picked eighth out of nine teams in the Big South Preseason Poll, following a 4-11-3 campaign a season ago.
App State and Gardner-Webb have gone head-to-head dating back to 2004, with a total of 8 matchups over 22 years. App State leads Gardner-Webb 4-3-1, most recently winning 4-3 in Boone in 2018. App State scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick from Maggie Hanusek in the final two minutes of the match.
