HARRISONBURG, Va. – Behind a relentless offensive attack that produced season-highs in both runs and hits, App State Baseball powered past James Madison 19-10 on Saturday to clinch the series.
The Mountaineers (21-16, 9-8 SBC) tallied 19 runs on 20 hits, marking the program's highest scoring output since 2024 against Marshall and its first game with at least 20 hits since 2022.
App State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, fueled by an RBI single from Ethan Puig and a sacrifice fly by Drew DuPont. The Mountaineers added four more in the second as Puig, Jake Mummau, Colton Denton, and Charlie Evans all picked up their second RBIs of the game to move the scoring total to nine, one less than the 10 scored in the first game of the series.
After the Dukes (16-21, 6-11 SBC) narrowed the gap to 9-8 in the fourth, App State pulled away for good with a four-run sixth inning. Denton delivered a two-run double, followed by back-to-back hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded to force home two more.
Steven Smith and Kameron Miller provided late offense with home runs in the seventh and eighth innings to help put the game out of reach as James Madison failed to score in the final three innings.
Gage Peterson remained unblemished, moving to 5-0 on the season, while Max Tramontana provided over two innings of hitless relief to close the door. Smith, Puig, Denton, and Evans all recorded three hits in the victory.
