HATTIESBURG, Miss. – App State Baseball was unable to overcome a six-run second inning and fell in the rubber game against Southern Miss 13-4 on Sunday at Pete Taylor Park.
The Mountaineers (13-13, 3-6) were limited to just one extra-base hit in the ballgame, while the Golden Eagles (21-7, 5-4) hit three home runs, including a grand slam from Joey Urban in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.
App State battled back in the top of the third.
Jake Mummau and
Charlie Evans opened the inning with back-to-back singles and
Steven Smith walked to load the bases.
Tank Yaghoubi got the Mountaineers on the board with a sacrifice fly and
Riley Luft followed with an RBI single up the middle.
Ethan Puig made it a 6-3 ballgame with an RBI double to left field.
Despite App State slicing the lead in half in the top of the third, Southern Miss responded with two more runs in the home half of the inning.
The Mountaineers looked to rally again in the fourth, loading the bases and plating a run on a walk to Yaghoubi, but they were not able to come up with a timely hit and stranded the bases full.
Despite knocking Southern Miss starter Thomas Crabtree from the ballgame in the third inning, the Mountaineers were held in check by the Golden Eagles bullpen, which gave up just one run in 6.1 innings and struck out 11. Colby Allen fanned seven in three scoreless innings of relief.
Luft and Puig each tallied a pair of hits in the game for the Mountaineers, while Yaghoubi drove in two of the four runs.
Carter Stanford struck out three, working the final two innings of the ballgame in relief for App State, while
Everette Harris also worked 1.1 scoreless innings.
The Mountaineers begin a four-game homestand on Tuesday when the team welcomes UNC Asheville to Boone. The Bulldogs are 14-14 on the season and 2-4 in Big South play. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
