BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's track and field team is set to compete at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on Monday and Tuesday.
Action on Monday starts at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT) with the multis. Field events are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. CT) and track events will start at 4:05 p.m. ET (3:05 p.m. CT). Monday's ESPN+ coverage will start at 3 p.m. ET (2 p.m. CT).
The multis will continue on Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT). Tuesday's field events will begin at 12:15 p.m. ET (11:15 a.m. CT) and events on the track are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. CT). Tuesday's ESPN+ coverage will begin at 1:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. CT).
Meet Rewind
App State rounded out the indoor regular season with a first-place team finish at the VMI Winter Classic with 209 points. Five Mountaineers registered individual first-place finishes and the Mountaineers tallied 31 top five finishes. Freshman
Ashlynn Wimberly placed first in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.65m. The Mountaineers went 1-2-3 in the women's pole vault, women's 800 meters, and women's mile. Sophomore
Lilly Nichols, who reset the App State program and Sun Belt indoor regular season women's pole vault records with a clearance of 4.27m (14' 0") at the beginning of the month, finished first in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.05m (13' 3.5"). With a personal best of 2:12.45, fellow sophomore
Savannah Moore set pace for the Black and Gold in the women's 800 meters, placing first overall. Meanwhile, freshman
Tessa Massa, who finished third in the women's 800 meters (2:20.24 PR), led the pack in the women's mile, recording a time of 5:06.29 to finish first in the event. Additionally, freshman
Elizabeth McCart placed first in the women's 3,000 meters after stopping the clock at 10:22.47.
2025 SBC Indoor Championships Review
App State placed third in the team standings with 82 points at the 2025 SBC Indoor Championships, recording its best team finish at the indoor championships since 2016. Nine Mountaineers earned All-SBC honors for their performances at the championship meet. Nichols was named the program's first Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, having broken the App State, SBC regular season, and Polish U20 indoor women's pole vault record in her collegiate debut with a clearance of 4.26m (13' 11.75"). At the championship meet she placed second with a clearance of 4.18m (13' 8.5") to earn second-team All-SBC accolades.
Jasmine Donohue, who earned first-team All-SBC honors, was the women's top meet scorer, tallying 24 points for the Black and Gold. She garnered gold in the women's 5,000 meters (16:40.61), secured silver in the women's 3,000 meters (9:43.26), and bronze in the women's mile (4:47.67).
Emma Russum joined Donohue on the podium after placing second with a time of 16:40.61 in the women's 5,000 meters. The women's 4x400-meter relay and women's distance medley relay (DMR) teams collected second-team All-SBC honors for their efforts. The 4x400-meter quartet of
Nicole Wells,
Addison Ollendick-Smith,
Ja'Naya Linder, and
Jayla Adams stopped the clock at 3:45.19, while the DMR team of Moore, Wells, Ollendick-Smith, and
Lauren Johnston recorded a time of 11:35.52. Individually, Johnston finished third in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 9:44.25.
Sixteen Mountaineers who competed at the 2025 edition of the indoor conference championships make their return to Birmingham this week.
In the Rankings
Entering the SBC Indoor Championships, 13 Mountaineers stand among the league's top five in seven events. Nichols and senior
Ava Studney rank first and second, respectively, in the women's pole vault. Additionally, Nichols ranks seventh in the NCAA Southeast Region and 32nd nationally. Junior
Kendall Johnson stands second in the league and 16th regionally in the women's 60 meters, while Wimberly ranks third in the conference and 16th in the women's triple jump. In the women's 800 meters, Moore stands fourth in the SBC. Senior
Damyja Alejandro-Ortiz rounds out the league's top five in the women's 400 meters. The women's 4x400-meter relay team (Wells, Adams, senior
Daye Talley, and Alejandro-Ortiz) and the DMR team (senior
Maddie Quinn, sophomore
Ella Battel, and freshmen
Lika Strydom and
Tessa Massa), round out the Sun Belt's top five in both categories.
On Deck
The Mountaineers will travel to Staten Island, NY to compete at the USATF Indoor Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 28-March 1.
The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are slated for March 13 and 14 and will be held in Fayetteville, Ark. The NCAA's top-16 athletes in each event will advance to the championship. The final list of competitors will be available on March 3 and final start lists will be announced on March 11 on NCAA.com.
The App State men's and women's outdoor track and field season will start on March 13 and 14 with the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
