BLACKSBURG, Va. – The App State tennis team is set to take on Virginia Tech on Friday at 3 p.m.
The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, but was moved a day earlier due to winter weather forecasts.
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers dropped their first match of the season to No. 3 North Carolina on Friday, 7-0. All Mountaineers were defeated in straight sets in singles play, as the Tar Heels featured players ranked in the top 60 in the Nos. 1-4 spots.
On the Mountaineers
App State begins the spring season following a historic fall campaign by Savannah Dada-Mascoll. Currently ranked No. 5 in the nation, Dada-Mascoll defeated nine ranked opponents, including then-No. 1 DJ Bennett, en route to becoming an NCAA singles quarterfinalist and earning All-American honors.
The Mountaineers are coming off a record-breaking 2025 season in which the program earned 17 wins. That run included nine Sun Belt Conference victories, eight of which were consecutive, as part of a 10-match winning streak.
This year's roster retains six players: Dada-Mascoll, Ruby Broadbent, Alexi Cleveland, Naledi Manyube, Taya Powell and Isabela Romanichen. Third-year head coach Hannah Fetters also added two newcomers to the squad: Sreenidhi Balaji and Allegra Hodson.
On the Hokies
Virginia Tech enters the season after finishing 13-12 (2-10 ACC) in 2025. The Hokies return five players from last year's squad and add four freshmen to the 2026 team.
The Hokies are led by head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Holdren, who is entering her 20th year at the helm of the program.
Next Up
The Mountaineers will gear up to take on UNC Asheville for the home opener Jan. 30. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at the App State Tennis Courts at the Appalachian 105 Complex. Due to forecasted inclement weather, the match against VCU originally scheduled for Sunday has been rescheduled for March 6 in Boone, N.C.
