Mountaineers Tally 14 Top-Five Finishes on First Day of Weems Baskin Relays

COLUMBIA, S.C.   The App State men's and women's track and field team opened competition at South Carolina's Weems Baskin Relays with four event wins and 14 top-five finishes on Friday. The meet will resume on Saturday with field events slated for a 10 a.m. start and track events slated for an 11 a.m. start.
 
Senior Niejel Wilkins clinched first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.95m (49' 0.75").
 
On the track, sophomore Addison Ollendick-Smith stopped the clock at 2:12.87 for a personal best and first-place finish in the women's 800 meters. Her time moved her to eighth in the App State all-time list.
 
Graduate student Jonah Bird led the Mountaineers in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking a season best of 9:28.96, while Steven Smith followed to secure second with a personal best of 9:35.32. Junior Jackson Nichols also finished among the top-five, stopping the clock at 10:05.21 to place fourth.
 
In the men's 5,000 meters, junior Garrett Bivens led the pack, stopping the clock at 14:43.64 for the win. Graduate student Ethan Barber finished second (14:51.71, PR), graduate student Oliver Wilson-Cook took fourth (15:01.89), senior Ben Datte took fifth (15:11.99, PR), and junior Chase Burrell took sixth (15:13.79)
 
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, graduate student Claire Mason finished fourth (11:38.92) and junior Morgan Kornke finished fifth (12:00.48, PR). Junior Catherine Breault clocked a personal best in the women's 5,000 meters as she rounded out the top-five with a time of 17:45.06. Senior Dwayne Lillie rounded out the top-five in the men's 1,500 meters with a time of 3:56.44 and junior Rylan Haskett followed close behind, finishing sixth with a personal best of 3:56.78.
 
Junior Daiyanna Cooper and senior Chris Wainscott placed third in the women's and men's weight throw, respectively. Cooper recorded a toss of 52.12m (171' 0") in the women's event, while Wainscott took third with a season best toss of 57.78m (189' 6") in the men's. In the men's long jump, freshman Jared Hiatt landed fourth with a personal best leap of 6.89m (22' 7.25").
