App State, which is ranked as highly as No. 20 in the country from Win Magazine and sits at No. 24 in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, possesses six wrestlers with top-33 national rankings after having three wrestlers place at the Southern Scuffle.
Binghamton also had three wrestlers place at the Southern Scuffle, and it's had five wrestlers with a top-33 ranking in recent weeks, so Sunday's matchup is expected to be a tight one. The Bearcats are 2-6 following their Friday night loss at No. 6 NC State in Raleigh.
Three of their other losses are against top-30 programs from the Big Ten, including a 19-15 loss to No. 9 Minnesota and a 25-16 loss to Indiana, which is unofficially 26th in the Coaches Poll. There's also an 18-13 loss to No. 16 North Dakota State and a 22-16 loss to a traditionally strong Northern Colorado program.
App State wrestlers ranked among the most notable publications are
Jon Jon Millner (as high as No. 7 at 149 pounds),
Caleb Smith (as high as No. 20 at 125 pounds),
Sean Carter (as high as No. 24 at 133 pounds),
Will Formato (as high as No. 26 at 165 pounds),
Will Miller (as high as No. 29 at 174 pounds) and
Tommy Askey (as high as No. 31 at 157 pounds).
Binghamton's highest-ranked wrestlers are at the heaviest weights as Lou DePrez (No. 9 at 197 pounds, according to Intermat) and Jacob Nolan (No. 23 at 184 pounds, according to Intermat) are returning NCAA qualifiers from a program that sent four wrestlers to Detroit last year. DePrez reached the Southern Scuffle final last weekend before suffering an injury in that match, so his status is doubtful for Sunday.
After also making a Southern Scuffle final, Cory Day is the 21st-ranked heavyweight according to Intermat. FloWrestling had Sam DePrez ranked 26th at 174 pounds prior to the Southern Scuffle. Brevin Cassella won a match at the NCAAs last season, but he's one of several wrestlers who has spent time in Binghamton's lineup at 165 pounds. Binghamton's long win against NC State was an overtime decision at 125 from Micah Roes over No. 24 Jarrett Trombley, but Anthony Sobotker is listed as the probable starter at 125.
With 19 matches already under his belt, Millner didn't compete in Chattanooga, but App State still received top-eight showings from Smith, Askey and Carter.
App State and Binghamton will be squaring off for the first time since the 2014-15 season, when the Mountaineers prevailed 22-15 in Boone. App State holds a 3-1 lead in the series.
The 2022-23 season is presented by Hungry Howies and Penn Station.
