No. 19 Wrestling Hosts Duke on Tuesday Night

BOONE, N.C. — Hosting an ACC program for the second time in 11 days, App State Wrestling will face Duke on Tuesday night in Varsity Gym.

The nonconference dual between the 19th-ranked Mountaineers (6-2) and Blue Devils (3-6) will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by clicking HERE.

App State home duals are streamed live at by Yosef Media, with access available by subscribing to The Grind's Rokfin channel with a pay-per-view rate of $10 per App State dual.

It will be Student Appreciation Day and Professors Day in Varsity Gym, with a pizza giveaway for students at the front entrance while supplies last. Nominated App State professors will also be recognized on the mat during intermission.

App State, which is also No. 20 in InterMat's rankings and as high as No. 18 (from Win Magazine), will be facing an ACC program for the fourth time this season. It won 19-16 at then-No. 21 North Carolina, and the Mountaineers' only two losses to date were competitive duals against top-10 programs Virginia Tech (23-11) and NC State (26-12).

The Hokies visited Varsity Gym on Jan. 13, and App State will be squaring off against Duke for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons — they didn't meet in the abbreviated 2020-21 season. The Mountaineers hold a 15-6 lead in the series.

App State will be seeking its 10th win against a Power Five program since JohnMark Bentley took over as head coach. Even with three duals this season against ranked ACC teams, Caleb Smith and Will Formato have undefeated dual records in 2022-23.

Smith, Formato, Jon Jon Millner, Tommy Askey and Will Miller have top-33 positions in the first set of NCAA Coaches' Rankings, while Duke has one ranked wrestler: No. 20 Jonah Niesenbaum at heavyweight. Niesenbaum and Vincent Baker (at 197 pounds) closed a 37-6 loss to North Carolina over the weekend with narrow victories.

As a team, Duke's dual wins have come against Bloomsburg, Franklin & Marshall and Presbyterian.

The 2022-23 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station.
