In the last six seasons, App State is 36-3 in SoCon duals and Campbell is 36-4. When not facing each other, they're a combined 67-2 against the rest of the league in that span, with App State at 34-0 and Campbell at 33-2 (with two losses to Chattanooga).
It's the first meeting in Boone between the Mountaineers and Camels since 2019, as Buies Creek was the site for a 20-13 win for Campbell in 2020 and a 21-17 win for Campbell in 2021. Last year, App State built a 17-3 lead before the Camels had two pins while winning the last four matches.
In their last four meetings, App State and Campbell have split the 40 individual matches with 20 wins apiece — and half of the 40 individual matches have been decided in overtime, by one point or by two points. Campbell's 3-1 record against App State in that stretch is by a combined team score of 72-65.
The Mountaineers have more ranked wrestlers at the lighter weights, while many of Camels' highest-ranked wrestlers are at the heavier weights, leading to big runs from both teams over the last few years.
App State had six wrestlers with top-33 recognition in the first set of NCAA Coaches rankings —
Caleb Smith (125 pounds),
Codi Russell (133),
Jonathan Millner (149),
Cody Bond (157),
Will Formato (165) and
Thomas Flitz (174). Campbell had five wrestlers with top-33 recognition — Korbin Meink (125), Josh Heil (149), Austin Murphy (174), Caleb Hopkins (184) and Taye Ghadiali (HWT).
The same 149-pound weight class has the two highest-ranked wrestlers in the SoCon, with Millner (returning All-American) at No. 5 and Heil at No. 7.
The first 50 App State students through the doors will receive a free wrestling shirt, and popcorn will be offered free to students as well as faculty/staff in attendance. Some professors who have made an impact on App State Wrestling student-athletes will be recognized during the dual.
The 2021-22 wrestling season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station.
