Biography

Career: Two-year starter at heavyweight went 45-28 in his App State career, including 13-7 in duals and 11-4 in SoCon duals … Delivered one of the most dramatic victories in App State Wrestling history, as he turned a four-point deficit going into the final match at Chattanooga into a 18-16 team victory thanks to a six-point pin that helped the title-winning Mountaineers go unbeaten in SoCon duals … Third-place SoCon finisher in 2022 … Went 6-0 in his career against wrestlers from Chattanooga.

2021-22: Placed third at the SoCon Championship … Went 16-8 overall with an 8-3 dual record, including a 6-1 mark in SoCon duals (with three falls) … Delivered one of the most dramatic victories in App State Wrestling history, as he turned a four-point deficit going into the final match at Chattanooga into a 18-16 team victory thanks to a six-point pin that helped the title-winning Mountaineers go unbeaten in SoCon duals … An early takedown contributed to a 2-1 lead that Matthias Ervin carried into the second period, meaning Burchell had even more work to do to earn a win worth at least four team points, but he got on top of Ervin in the final minute of the second period with a two-point takedown via a double underhook and turned a body lock into a pin 14 seconds later … Had one of his best showings at the SoCon Championship, going 3-1 with a 6-1 decision against Ervin, a 10-1 major decision against Gardner-Webb’s Peyton McComas in a consolation match and a 16-6 major decision against Davidson’s Mitchell Trigg in the third-place match … Won a 3-2 decision against North Carolina’s Brandon Whitman … Placed second at the Keystone Classic and third at the Mountaineer Invitational, winning by fall against Indiana’s Jacob Bullock in the third-place match.

2020-21: Fourth-place SoCon finisher in the heavyweight division … Went 8-7 in first year as a starter … Posted a 5-3 record in SoCon duals with one pin and one major decision … Had 2-2 record at SoCon Championship with a 7-5 decision in the quarterfinals and another victory in the consolation bracket … In App State’s 20-13 win against Chattanooga, Mocs needed a bonus-point win in the heavyweight division to possibly snatch away a team victory, but Burchell broke a 1-1 tie on a takedown with 1:31 left in his 4-1 decision against Grayson Walthall.

2019-20: Went 21-13 overall as a redshirt freshman heavyweight with nine pins (tied for 26th nationally alongside senior teammate Cary Miller) … Member of the SoCon All-Freshman team … Second-place finish at the Wolfpack Open included a second-period pin of NC State starter and NCAA qualifier Deonte Wilson (No. 22 seed) … Second place at the Mountaineer Invitational and second place in the freshman/sophomore division at the Southeast Open … Third place at the Appalachian Open, getting a pin against Chattanooga starter Grayson Walthall in the third-place match.

2018-19: Redshirted … Wrestling unattached, went 12-13 as a heavyweight … Third place at the Hokie Open in the freshman/sophomore division … Fourth place at the Pembroke Classic and Newberry Open... Member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
