ATLANTA, Ga. – Michaela Porter scored six of her game-high 21 points in overtime to lead App State to an 84-78 victory at Georgia State on Saturday afternoon.
Spoiling Georgia State's senior day and its last game inside the GSU Sports Arena, the Mountaineers (12-10, 6-3 SBC) now have their best record through nine Sun Belt games since joining the league eight years ago.
The Panthers' Ashley Foster made a game-tying layup with five seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime at 74-74.
Porter and the Mountaineers dominated the extra period, particularly on the defensive end where they allowed just four points.
Faith Alston gave App State a 1-point lead with a pair of free throws at the 3:58 mark, and the visiting team never trailed again. Porter made 4-of-4 free throws, and she and
Janay Sanders both drove the lane for key baskets to put the game out of reach once and for all.
It was a bit of a redemption performance for App State, which lost by two in overtime on Thursday in Statesboro, Ga.
Porter led four Mountaineers in double figures and pulled down 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Sanders scored 20 points, and
Alexia Allesch and Alston chipped in 15 apiece. Allesch had 13 boards to notch her ninth double-double of the season and eighth in the last 10 games.
Porter's impressive all-around performance also included a career-high seven assists and 7-of-8 free-throw attempts while leading all players with 42 minutes played.
App State out-rebounded Georgia State (8-13, 2-7 SBC) by a margin of 49-31. The 49 rebounds were the most for
Angel Elderkin's team in league play this year.
The Mountaineers conclude their four-game road swing with a 2-2 record and return home for three games at the Holmes Convocation Center to close out the regular season. Next up is Texas State on Saturday, Feb. 19 (2 p.m., ESPN+).
